CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

Ali burst through the hospital doors with a spring in his step and Kalo trailing close behind. His husband’s growly chuckle echoed through the empty hallway.

“Slow down. This is a hospital. You’re going to hurt someone, îngerul meu.”

With a deep breath and sudden lurching of his body, Ali came to a dead stop. “Kristof!”

Kalo stared at him like he’d grown another head. “What?”

“Mercy to the Goddess, Kalo. I completely forgot he’s flying in first thing this morning.”

“Relax,” Kalo said as he wound a reassuring arm around Ali’s shoulders. “Lucius and Nicu are picking him up then bringing him straight here.” He pressed his mouth to the side of Ali’s face, the coolness of his vampire touch sending Ali hurtling back to reality. Kalo must have noticed since he tugged him closer with another kiss. “You never told me what the nurse said.”

Ali resumed walking, slower this time with Kalo’s big hand curled loosely around the back of his neck. “Just that he shifted and Mika said he’d woken up briefly.”

“Why didn’t Mika call you himself?”

Ali shrugged, stepping out of Kalo’s grasp as he pushed open the set of doors that would lead him to his cub. “Apparently, Manny didn’t want him to leave.”

He turned to see Kalo grinning like the damn Cheshire Cat. His mirth was overtly apparent when he spoke. “It would be awesome if he actually said that.”

“Yes, I know, and I understand Mika is in pain too, but neither of you should get your hopes up.”

“It’s still a nice thought.”

“Hopeless romantic volf. If I didn’t see it every day with my own eyes, I’d think it was a myth.”

Kalo took Ali’s hand, planting a quick kiss to the top before entwining their fingers. “Are you complaining, îngerul meu?”

“Not on your life.” Ali whipped his hair over his shoulder before tightening his grip around Kalo’s fingers. “Now, did you remember Mika’s supplements?”

Kalo patted his front pocket. “I’m sure I would have managed even if Nicu hadn’t had them waiting for me on the kitchen counter this morning.”

Ali laughed almost soundlessly, an actual light-hearted snicker that tickled his throat and felt good in his heart. “He’s very organized and caring.”

“As are you.”

“I wasn’t looking for a compliment, but thank you.” He almost dragged Kalo along behind him, his anxiety doubling as the unit that housed Manny loomed in the distance. “Nicu has me beat by a landslide, though. Lucius is lucky to have him. I used to wonder what would become of my wild wolf with all his proclivities to darkness and solitude. I guess Nicu brought him some light—”

“Ali.”

“Goddess knows we could all use some of his light.”

“Sweetheart?”

“We have to make sure Manny knows there’s still hope—”

“Ali!” Kalo’s voice was unusually gruff. Ali paused to glare at him.

“What?”

“You missed the door to the unit.”

“What? Nonsense, no I didn’t.” He twisted backwards, immediately spotting the large green sign. “Oh for Goddess’ sake. I guess you should guide me from now on.”

Kalo led him back down the hall, gathering him at his side and pecking a quick kiss to his hair.
